Ford's history in global racing is filled with legendary achievements. Commissioned by Ford, the Cosworth DFV V8 engine revolutionized Formula 1 racing mechanics and car design. Here is what made this classic V8 engine stand out from the competition.
A Compact Powerhouse With Top-Notch Performance and Reliability
Keith Duckworth and Mike Costin of Cosworth were tasked by Ford in 1965 to create a top-tier Formula 1 engine. The pair chose a simple V8 layout over complex V12 or H16 configurations to maximize reliability and internal airflow.
The design featured four valves per cylinder rather than two, allowing the 32-valve Cosworth V8 to maximize air and fuel delivery. The engine outputted 408 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Its high-revving nature ensured the Cosworth DFV V8 remained a powerhouse in Formula 1, even as rival teams introduced turbocharged powertrains.
Engineers also designed the rear suspension to mount straight to the engine block, shaving off extra weight. When it debuted at the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Jim Clark drove the Ford-Cosworth DFV Lotus 49 to a dominant victory in its first outing, signaling the start of a two-decade reign in Formula 1.
