How Often Should You Replace Your Windshield Wipers?
Windshield wipers should be replaced every six to 12 months, but it's better to keep an eye on your wipers and replace them as needed. The life of your windshield wipers can be affected by a number of factors, such as how often they are used, where you keep your vehicle, and where you've driven. Even if you've had your current windshield wipers for less than six months, you should still be on the lookout for the following signs of damage.
Damaged Rubber
The rubber blades on your windshield wipers should work like squeegees to wipe your windshield free of water, ice, snow, or anything else that is making your drive difficult. They are also susceptible to damage, especially if you've had to use your wipers frequently. Check your rubber wiper blades at least once a month. If they are rough to the touch or there are visible cracks or gouges in the rubber, your wipers should be replaced.
Streaks in Your Windshield
Older windshield wiper blades tend to leave streaks in your windshield. While this is usually not much more than a mild annoyance, it will get worse until it impairs your vision. Streaks mean that your windshield wipers aren't doing their job anymore, so replace them as soon as possible.
Squeaks and Squeals
Older or damaged windshield wipers can make a harsh squeaking or squealing sound when they're used. While you might be able to get some use out of squeaky windshield wipers, you won't want to use them for long. Not only is this a sign that your wipers are on their last legs, but nobody likes to drive when they have to listen to something that sounds like nails on a chalkboard.
Rusty Frames
When you check your rubber wiper blades, check your windshield wipers' metal arms and joints for rust. A little bit of rust and corrosion won't impair your vision, but it is a sign that your windshield wipers are nearing the end of their lives. Wipers that are too rusty could break off, which is never a good thing when you're on the highway during a thunderstorm.
Quality Replacement
The good news is that it's not hard to replace your windshield wipers. You only need to purchase replacement wipers at an automotive store and install them yourself in most cases. If you aren't comfortable with that, you can also bring your vehicle to Serramonte Ford. We can take a look at your car and determine which windshield wipers will be best for you.
