Speculations have been swirling for the last couple years about Ford's return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For quite some time, we've been waiting to hear good news about the automaker's Le Mans future, and just recently, we finally got what we've been waiting for. It is official - the all-new Ford GT is set to take on the 24 Hour of Le Mans in 2016, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Ford's 1966 Le Man's victory.
The new Ford GT racecar, based off the standard Ford GT, will enter the Le Mans GTE Pro class next year. Four cars will run in the race, which will be operated by two teams: Chip Ganassi Racing and Felix Sabates. Ford will be entering the GT cars to celebrate their famous Le Man's victory in 1966, when their GT40 racecars secured a 1-2-3 finish. Back then, Henry Ford was out to prove Ford racecars could keep up with the best of them on the track and take home a solid victory.
Aside from competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Ford GT racecar will also compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship next year. The standard Ford GT will also go on sale in 2016, so feel free to stop by Serramonte Ford and find out how you can get your hands on the high-performance model.
